Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy for Hair Restoration

Since our inception, Terrell Clinic has been working with men and women to help restore confidence for those suffering from hair loss or thinning hair. Over the years, we have introduced significantly advanced and effective treatments to restore hair growth, volume, and vibrancy.

PRP Therapy— or Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy is now one of the most sought after services at our Oklahoma City Medical Aesthetic Center. PRP Therapy is a non-surgical process that stimulates the scalp, skin, and hair follicles and regenerates the growth of healthier, stronger cells using the body’s own healing powers. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) can re-energize your hair cells to promote hair growth.

How does Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy work?

To perform PRP Therapy, we draw a small amount of blood (much like any normal blood testing process), and then spin it in a centrifuge that separates out the platelet-rich plasma into a very high and healthy concentration—completely optimized for maximum tissue regeneration and healing.

This concentrated PRP is then reinjected into the scalp to stimulate inactive hair follicles into an active state of growth. PRP is ideal because it uses your own cells, unmodified and unchanged, to heal and regenerate follicles without the risk of allergy or rejection from your immune system.

To prevent any pain, a gentle anesthetic is administered to the scalp. Upon completion, you are fully capable of driving and finishing your day with ease. Hair should not be washed until the following day. Ideally, treatments should be administered every two to three months.

PRP Therapy combined with Sunetics Laser Hair Restoration

To fully optimize your results, we often advise patients to combine PRP Therapy with our Sunetics Laser Hair Restoration Therapy. During your laser treatments, PRP can be performed every four to six weeks to continue the process of stimulating growth.

Is PRP Hair Restoration Therapy right for me?

Prior to performing the treatment, we will conduct a complimentary consultation to help you determine if PRP therapy is right for you. Ideal candidates are those who are currently experiencing thinning hair.

Those who have a history of heavy smoking, drug, or alcohol use or chronic infections, liver, skin, or other blood diseases may not be ideal candidates.

Both men and women can suffer from hair loss due to a number of factors ranging from genetics to hormonal imbalances. In any case, there is no reason to simply accept hair loss as a side effect if you are uncomfortable with it. We are eager to work with you to make hair loss one less thing to worry about!

What to Expect with PRP Therapy for Hair Restoration

This treatment involves the collection of your blood which is then spun down using a centrifuge to separate the plasma and platelet portion using a special filter. The PRP portion is then injected into your scalp to rejuvenate hair cells.

Pre-Procedure

Below are the pre-procedure instructions to optimize the results of your PRP for Hair Restoration treatment.

  • Supplements: Do not use blood thinning agents such as Vitamin E, Vitamin A, Ginkgo, Garlic, Flax, Cod Liver Oil, and Essential Fatty Acids at least one week prior to your treatment.
  • Alcohol: Avoid alcohol at least three days prior to your treatment.
  • Smoking: Avoid cigarettes for at least three days prior to treatment, if possible. Smoking slows the healing process.
  • Medications: Avoid Aspirin, Advil, Motrin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen, Voltaren and other anti-inflammatory medications for three to seven days prior to your procedure. We want inflammation to occur as this is one mechanism by which PRP works. You may take Tylenol (acetaminophen) if needed.

Post-Procedure

It is quite normal to experience mild soreness and possible swelling in the area of injections. However, most patients report that it diminishes the next day. Below are the post-procedure instructions to optimize the results of your PRP for Hair Restoration treatment.

  • Shampooing: please wait to shampoo your hair the day after your procedure.
  • Hair Coloring: it is fine to color your hair three days after the procedure.
  • Hats: wearing a hat after the procedure is fine if you’d like. If fact, please limit sun exposure on the area for two days. Be sure that the hat fits loose and is not tight on the injected areas of the scalp.
  • Supplements: Do not use blood thinning agents such as Vitamin E, Vitamin A, Ginkgo, Garlic, Flax, Cod Liver Oil, and Essential Fatty Acids at least one week after your treatment.
  • Alcohol: Avoid alcohol for the next three days.
  • Smoking: Avoid cigarettes for the next three days, if possible. Smoking slows the healing process.
  • Medications: Avoid Aspirin, Advil, Motrin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen, Voltaren and other anti-inflammatory medications for three to seven days after your procedure. We want inflammation to occur as this is one mechanism by which PRP works. You may take Tylenol (acetaminophen) if needed.
  • Exercising: Avoid strenuous exercise or anything to cause sweating in your scalp for three days.
